Letter to The Hon. Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade of Ontario

April 17, 2020

Minister Fedeli,

In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, a time in which the public and private sectors, including our members – some of the leading technology companies from Ontario and around the world – must work together. In both dealing with the current crisis, and addressing plans to re-build Ontario’s economy in the months to come, the Government of Ontario, including your Ministry, should collaborate with high growth sectors that can lead the charge into a prosperous future.

As the national industry association for Canada’s technology sector, including large, multinational corporations and small and medium-sized Canadian start-ups and scale-ups, TECHNATION is uniquely situated to engage governments concerning a wide range of goods and services both in this time of need and during recovery. Our member companies provide a wide range of products and services, including: Cloud-services, education and training in new technologies, artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities, and workplace management tools. We are situated in all sectors of the economy, including, and especially during the COVID-19 crisis, in health.

It is with this in mind that I am reaching out to you with two requests:

  • A phone call to discuss ways in which our industry association can support your government today and into the future; and
  • Your virtual attendance at our next TECHNATION Ontario Public Sector Business Committee (PSBC) meeting. At this meeting, our members are interested in hearing about the work that you, your ministry, and your government are undertaking to re-build Ontario’s economy – and the ways the tech sector can help with this endeavor.

At a time when companies in every industry across the province have suffered revenue drops, laid off employees, and/or are at risk of closing their doors, your government has launched the Ontario Jobs and Recovery Committee. To activate the potential in our sector to help your government, I believe a discussion around the many ways in which we can help would be a positive first step.

Following this conversation, I would be happy to arrange a curated meeting with relevant TECHNATION members and your team to address specific challenges and the many opportunities now -and into the future – that the private and public sectors can continue to collaborate.

As this crisis continues, I wish you, your team, and your family good health and strength.

With thanks,

Angela Mondou
President and CEO

9 VCs in Madrid and Barcelona discuss the COVID-19 era and look to the future

Spain’s startup ecosystem has two main hubs: Madrid and Barcelona. Most observers place Barcelona first and Madrid second, but the gap appears to close every year. Barcelona has benefitted from attracting expats in search of sun, beach and lifestyle who tend to produce more internationally minded startups. Madrid’s startups have predominantly been Spain or Latin America-focused, but have become increasingly international in nature. Although not part of this survey, we expect Valencia to join next year, as city authorities have been going all-out to attract entrepreneurs and investors. The overall Spanish ecosystem is generally less mature than those in the U.K., France, Sweden and Germany, but it has been improving at a fast clip. More recently, entrepreneurs in Spain have moved away from emulating success in pursuit of innovative technologies. Following the financial crisis, the Spanish government supported the creation of startups with the launch of FOND-ICO GLOBAL, a €1.5 billi...

Emulating USB Dongle – Introducing HASP Dongle Emulator Software

Information Technology Blog - - Emulating USB Dongle – Introducing HASP Dongle Emulator Software - Information Technology Blog Over the years the methods used by software developers and producers to limit the amount of users to a specific number in a licensing agreement have become more complex.  The aim of copy protection is to protect the intellectual rights and financial investment of the individual developers and manufacturing companies.   A way of getting around this protection is to reproduce the media through which you can deliver the application to other users,  meaning that the software can be replicated far in excess of that specified in the license. One of the most common methods has been to use hardware keys or dongles which will enable the user to activate an application, unlocking its full functionality without using a device.  In addition, it offers good protection against attempts to pirate the software. In this article, we will look at th...
