(credit: Alex Wroblewski / Getty ) In a report to a committee of the Baltimore City Council last week, City Auditor Josh Pasch said that the city's Information Technology department could not provide any documentation of its work toward meeting agency performance goals because the only copies of that data were kept on local hard drives and never backed up to a server or the cloud. As the Baltimore Sun's Luke Broadwater reports , Pasch told the council: Performance measures data were saved electronically in responsible personnel's hard drives. One of the responsible personnel's hard drive was confiscated, and the other responsible personnel's selected files were removed due to the May 2019 ransomware incident...One of the things I’ve learned in my short time here is a great number of Baltimore City employees store entity information on their local computers. PayPal to enter China through GoPay acquisition

The People’s Bank of China has approved PayPal’s acquisition of a 70% equity state in GoPay (Guofubao Information Technology Co. [GoPay], Ltd.), which will make PayPal the first foreign payment platform to provide online payment services in China. GoPay has licenses for online and mobile transactions, and mainly provides payment products for industries including e-commerce, cross-border commerce, aviation tourism and others. According to a statement from Guofubao, PayPal acquired the controlling stake through the Shanghai-based subsidiary Yinbaobao Information Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. The companies did not disclose deal terms. The news of PayPal’s entry into China comes at a time when there’s increased tension between the U.S. and China, with The White House reportedly now considering curbing some U.S. investments in China amid the trade dispute between the countries. Apple hires pharmaceutical chief David Smoley for VP role

What you need to know Apple has hired David Smoley for vice president role. David Smoley was previously Chief Information Officer at drugmaker AstraZeneca. He will now work under Apple CIO Mary Demby. He's working under Chief Information Officer Mary Demby. Apple has filled out the position of vice president by hiring AstraZeneca Chief Financial Officer David Smoley. According to Bloomberg , he will work under Apple CIO Mary Demby taking up an information technology role. Smoley had previously been at U.K. drugmaker AstraZeneca for six years but has moved on and started working at Apple this month. Bloomberg notes that he joins Apple's group of about 100 VPs across the company that work under the executive team. Smoley will work under Mary Demby, Apple's Chief Financial Officer.
