National tech industry association supports CUSMA agreement

(OTTAWA, ON) – December 16, 2019 – The Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC), has issued a statement regarding the Canada-US-Mexico (CUSMA) negotiations:  The conclusion of these historical negotiations provides much needed stability and predictable rules for all companies that use digital technologies in North America.   North America continues to be Canada’s most important economic partner, and today’s agreement is a crucial one for the ongoing success and growth of Canadian business. We look forward to continued engagement with the Government of Canada on trade issues that will both directly and indirectly impact the Canadian tech sector.”

Given how much has changed in the field of technology from the original agreement, ITAC called on the three governments to negotiate an updated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that would modernize important elements including the digital trade chapter. This new agreement will help create an ecosystem that all three country’s tech sectors can participate in, setting them up to prosper, and as destinations for global investment.

According to ITAC President and CEO Angela Mondou, “It was crucial for Canada, the US and Mexico to conclude these negotiations in a manner that helps maintain a stable and structured investment community for our region. The digital trade provisions outlined in the agreement support Canadian digital service companies; and will lead a massive, innovative growth sector that helps drive the economy and supports individuals and businesses alike.”

On behalf of Canada’s tech sector, ITAC would specifically like to thank and congratulate Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Canada’s team of trade negotiators who have pushed hard for Canada’s interests during these lengthy and sensitive negotiations.

“NAFTA is vital to industry’s success, and Canada’s ability to reach new customers, markets and investors,” added Mondou. “This trilateral North American agreement will benefit our industry and our citizens for generations.”

9 VCs in Madrid and Barcelona discuss the COVID-19 era and look to the future

Spain’s startup ecosystem has two main hubs: Madrid and Barcelona. Most observers place Barcelona first and Madrid second, but the gap appears to close every year. Barcelona has benefitted from attracting expats in search of sun, beach and lifestyle who tend to produce more internationally minded startups. Madrid’s startups have predominantly been Spain or Latin America-focused, but have become increasingly international in nature. Although not part of this survey, we expect Valencia to join next year, as city authorities have been going all-out to attract entrepreneurs and investors. The overall Spanish ecosystem is generally less mature than those in the U.K., France, Sweden and Germany, but it has been improving at a fast clip. More recently, entrepreneurs in Spain have moved away from emulating success in pursuit of innovative technologies. Following the financial crisis, the Spanish government supported the creation of startups with the launch of FOND-ICO GLOBAL, a €1.5 billi
