FUNDING SUPPORT AVAILABLE: HIRE A STUDENT TODAY

A recent StatsCan study shows that 50 per cent of students have lost their jobs this summer. Despite immense job losses and shortages for students, the TECHNATION Career Ready Program continues to provide support to employers hiring students, providing immense industry relief. Funding for summer is now limited. Many students are looking for start dates in June, so it’s not too late yet. Questions? Contact careerready@technationcanada.ca 

Tech4Canada

The Responsible Tech Council is a collaborative multi-sector council comprised of industry and government leaders, to identify critical technology challenges and establish action-oriented priorities that can be accomplished within a 12-18 months horizon. The next Council meeting will focus on a COVID-19 call to action.

CYBERSECURITY UPDATES

After successfully completing the Canadian Cybersecurity Skills Framework and documenting aligned National Occupational Standard for Cybersecurity in Canada, TECHNATION’s AI & Cybersecurity Skills Initiative is kicking off the Learning Outcome development work.  Learning Outcomes define what learners will be able to do upon a completion of a course of study and should align with industry standards and requirements.  Learning Outcomes are leveraged by training and education institutions to develop new, or enhance existing, curriculum.  If you’d like to be involved in the development of these education materials, we are now seeking volunteers to partner together in the window between late May and August.  For more information contact Sandi Campbell at scampbell@technationcanada.ca.

HOLD THE DATE: SME Cyber Best Practices Virtual Event

TECHNATION is hosting an interactive event where cybersecurity experts will help SME leaders and technical advisors to better understand their cybersecurity threat and collaboratively develop cybersecurity best practices that can be applied to their context. The event will be held June 29 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. ESD. Registration details to follow shortly.

FEDERAL UPDATE

TECHNATION submitted a submission to the CRTC regarding its role and regulations related to the accessibility reporting requirements for broadcasting undertakings, Canadian telecommunications common carriers, and telecommunications service providers under the Accessible Canada Act (ACA). This week, the federal government announced the Regional Relief and Recovery Fund, which includes $1 billion in funding, disseminated through the regional development agencies. This fund is intended to cushion the financial blow experienced by businesses that do not qualify for other aid programs. For more information: Andrew Walker.

ONTARIO UPDATE

As Ontario is preparing to slowly re-open the economy, the Government of Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development Construction, has published sector-specific guidelines and posters to help protect workers, customers and the general public from COVID-19.  Please see here for more information.

On May 20, TECHNATION Minister Vic Fedeli will be our keynote for the Executive Briefing. A seasoned public official, having served previously as Mayor, Acting Leader of the Official Opposition, Minister of Finance and now as Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade and Chair of Cabinet, Minister Fedeli will provide unique insight on the Government of Ontario’s approach to economic recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. This will include the deliberations of the Jobs and Recovery Committee, in particular, support for and collaboration with the tech sector, including multinationals and SMEs, and ways in which TECHNATION members can support the Ontario government through procurement processes, collaboration, and beyond. On behalf of all TECHNATION, we want to extend our thanks, appreciation, and gratitude to Canadian nurses as the world recognizes and celebrate International Nurses Day (May 12, 2020) and National Nursing Week (May 11-17). The 2020 “Nursing the World to Health” theme was developed by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) to showcase how nurses are central to addressing a wide range of health challenges. This year marks the 200^th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, the founder of modern nursing and statistician, who laid the foundation for the field of Nursing Informatics. Today, Nursing Informatics is a critical success factor for enhancing the health and well being of individuals and the sustainability of the health care systems worldwide. Canadian Health Outcomes for Better Information and Care is leading the way with the implementation of the electronic collection of evidence-based patient-centred clinical outcomes in Canada. The project is funded by contributions from Canada Health Infoway and participating provincial partners, and is sponsored by the Canadian Nurses Association

We wish our Canadian nurses this most well-deserved national and global recognition of their tireless work to protect the wellness and health of our communities; and to all currently working the front lines through the global COVID-19 pandemic.
