What is USB?

A Universal Serial Bus or USB is a common term used for an interface that enables communication between various devices and a host controller such as a PC. Well, a USB helps you connect various devices using a standard interface. You can use USB to connect various devices with a host controller. The standard version of USB was introduced to improve plug and play devices. It simply means, you can plugin the device into a free socket and simply work.

What is USB 3.0?

The third major version of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) standard is USB 3.0. It helps you interface various electronic devices to your computer. It also brings various improvements, including the new transfer rate that is also referred to as SuperSpeed USB or SS. You can use USB 3.0 to transfer data at up to 5 Gbps that is 10 times faster than USB 2.0.

Here, USB 3.0 was introduced over a decade ago, it has significantly boosted up the speed of data transfer. You can differentiate USB 2.0 and 3.0 by seeing the blue connector in USB 3.0. Later, USB 3.0 was renamed with more fancy term USB 3.1 Gen 1. The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), the body that is tasked to develop, publish, and certify USB ports and standards has clarified that “the USB 3.1 specifications absorbed USB 3.0”, that means USB 3.0 is officially USB 3.1 Gen 1 now. However, there are no changes to the technical specifications.

What is USB 3.1?

Just to update you, USB 3.1 Gen 2 is the new name for USB 3.1 that helps you transfer data at a higher speed of up to 10Gbps. While USB 3.1 Gen 1 is referred to as SuperSpped USB or just SuperSpeed, the advanced USB 3.1 Gen 2 is referred to as SuperSpeed UB 10 GBPS, or just SuperSpeed +.

You can use USB 3.1 Gen 2 to enjoy seamless plug-and-play capabilities similar to previous generations of USB technologies, but with a 10X performance increase. Furthermore, it also offers better power management. Here, it enables you to transfer data at 10 Gbps or 1.2 GB/s.

Here, USB 3.1 drives save you lot of time by transferring files at faster speeds, the total amount of time may depend on multiple factors including transfer speeds, number of channels, type of files that you are transferring, and more. As USB 3.1 devices have backward compatibility, you can use these devices on USB 2.0 host devices which is pretty convenient.

What is USB Type-C?

USB-C also known as USB Type-C is emerging standard for charging your devices and transferring data at ultra-fast speeds. You can find USB Type-C in all the latest devices including phones, laptops, tablets, and more. With USB Type-C, you will rarely find issues like USB not working.

You can take USB Type-C as a description of the port connection itself. This is compact, small, and efficient in comparison to its predecessors. It technically replaces the standard Type-A and Type-B connections and also tons of micro and mini USB ports.

USB Type-C is reversible, so you needn’t flip the USB cable 3 times before you actually use it. It is expected to become the universal port for all devices available in the market including phones, laptops, tablets, and more. Here, Type-C is the connection type and can run on lesser spec such as USB 2.0.

You can differentiate USB 3.1 and USB Type-C with an important make. Here USB 3.1 is standard, and Type-C is a connector device.
